Well now, it’s about time, isn’t it!? LaunchBox 4.5 is here with a completely revamped import engine, including the ability to batch import MS-DOS games (and in the background, no less)! The ROM import has been much improved as well, and we’ve added a new Download Metadata and Images wizard for existing games.

RetroarchAlso notable for this release is better Retroarch support, automatic file organization on imports, and a few game controller improvements. Here’s the complete change log:

  • New game controller button options for Page Up, Page Down, Flip Box, and Play Music
  • New batch import for DOS games
  • Drag and drop ROM files or DOS games into LaunchBox to import them
  • Batch update metadata with the new Download Metadata and Images Wizard
  • LaunchBox will now automatically organize your game files on imports, if asked
  • DOSBox/ScummVM/Emulators can now be manually launched from the right-click menu
  • The controller’s Z axis (triggers) can now be used to scroll
  • Imports now happen in the background (keep using LaunchBox during the imports!)
  • Numbers sorting has been fixed
  • Retroarch command prompt windows are now hidden
  • Added default emulator settings for Retroarch and PCSX2
  • Changed the “Launch Random Game” feature to be “Select Random Game”
  • Updated the local games database from TheGamesDB.net
  • Left and right arrow keys will now move focus between the sidebar and the games view
  • Fixed search box clear button not rendering correctly when using default Windows styles

Do stop by on the Forums and let us know how we’re doing! We look forward to everyone’s suggestions and feedback.

Update (2015-03-14): LaunchBox 4.6 was just released to fix a bug that was introduced with 4.5.

Sort of resembles the new DOSBox configuration editor

Sort of resembles the new DOSBox configuration editor

Today is a big day; LaunchBox 4.7 was just released this morning with some groundbreaking new features, including 5 new fields for games and a long-awaited DOSBox configuration editor. You’re excited, I can tell.

Premium users will also enjoy the ability to add, filter by, and sort by custom fields for their games.

If you’ve long had a desire to track the names of the children of the primary executive from the publisher that first released your favorite games, now you can. We would suggest you call the field Publisher’s Primary Executive’s Bairn.

LaunchBox Translator Clive Barker

LaunchBox Translator Clive Barker

More importantly, LaunchBox has been translated into Spanish. I have it under good authority that Clive Barker (from none other than the LaunchBox Forums), spent a good 30+ hours translating every beautiful word from the LaunchBox interface into its more beautiful Español counterpart.

And then he reviewed it all. Twice. So if this tickles your fancy, you should probably tell him thank you, and then offer to mow his lawn. Seriously, he hasn’t had the time.

Update (2015-04-25): It’s a joke people. Clive from the forums is not the real Clive Barker. He’s just such a big fan, that he *really* wants to be Clive Barker.

Furthermore, we’ve squashed a bunch of bugs, sold the rights to Microsoft (great idea Mojang), and added a new voting feature so you can imprint your own personal desires towards the future of LaunchBox.

Vote when prompted in the app, or don’t be disappointed if the next feature is a picture of my spoiled cat.

No, we didn’t really sell the rights to Microsoft.

Random Nostalgia Generator

Sentai Brad’s been doing a Random Nostalgia Generator series for a while now…you should probably watch them. All of them. Now.

He’s using LaunchBox to randomly pick an old-school game to play, and judging by some of the games that have come up recently, we’re not sure if we should be scared or excited.

But you can be certain it’ll be an interesting experience.

Amiright? What are you doing organizing your games collection like a nerd when you could be watching these endlessly entertaining videos?

Check out Sentai Brad’s channel here, subscribe, and give him some kudos.

Let us know on the forums if you’ve integrated LaunchBox into any of your projects, and we’ll gladly give you a shout out here. We love to share how people are using LaunchBox.

More font options. That’s what this release boils down to. If you’re all about the fonts, then you’ll really like this new release. If not, then well…there’s always next time.

Yes, GOG is on top for a reason.

Yes, GOG is on top for a reason.

I won’t bother mentioning the fact that you can now import GOG, Origin, and other Windows games. Or that the Steam import has been completely revamped, and lets you import all your games, not just the ones that are installed.

I won’t even mention that you can now download Steam banners. Because in the grand scheme of things, those are all worthless features. It’s the fonts that really matter here.

In hindsight, we probably should have gone a completely different direction with this update; one more heavily focused on the fonts. But we hope you’ll settle for the new import options.

Maybe if you squint your eyes they’ll look like new font options, and then you can be more excited about this release. Maybe.

Update (2015-05-14): LaunchBox 4.9 was just released to fix a bug with the Windows game import.

Download LaunchBox 4.9 here, if it’s not too much to bear. Just know that this is harder for us than it is for you.

User-Contributable Game Metadata and Images System to replace TheGamesDB: 107 Votes

Custom Themes for Popup Dialogs to match the Main Window: 29 Votes

AutoHotkey-based Customization/Scripting System: 18 Votes

Clearly you guys love AutoHotkey about as much as we love valley-girl lingo. And the custom themes for pop-up dialogs? You treated them like those poor cops you just mowed down in GTA.

But obviously, we have a clear winner here. As much as we wanted to work on a new game metadata and images system, we took one for the team. We’ve been secretly slaving away on a shiny new home theater view, and we’re calling it Big Box Mode.

LaunchBox Big Box LogoIf you haven’t yet noticed, the Big Box Alpha (home theater/game cabinet view) is available right now for premium users. The alpha is fully functional, so don’t let that stop you.

Grab your copy, have your say in its development, and then go enjoy some immersive living room, game cabinet, (or desktop) gaming.

Upon the official release of LaunchBox 5.0 (which of course will also be the first official release of Big Box Mode), we will be increasing the price of LaunchBox Premium to $20. We think $20 is still more than fair, especially with the significance of Big Box Mode, and you’re getting a never-expiring, DRM-free license with forever upgrades.

If you’ve already purchased a license, of course you’re home free; you have nothing to worry about, and you can be happy you got in early. :)

If you haven’t purchased a license, now is the time. Get it now before the price increase!

While we’re busy squashing copy and translating bugs (…or is it the other way around), we thought we’d mention that we’re on schedule to release LaunchBox 5.0, Big Box included, on Thursday, August 13th. That’s one week from today, if you want to do the math.

We think Big Box is really starting to live up to its name, with over 10 different transition animations, videos, sounds, and a million customization options. Check it out in the video below:

And finally, here’s one last reminder. On release day, the price of LaunchBox Premium will increase to $20, so if you haven’t grabbed it yet, you’ve got one week left to save yourself the ten bucks.

Behold. Tonight we release 5.0.

As the clock strikes midnight, I’m reminded of the struggles. The struggles for stability, the struggles for consistency, the struggles for flexibility. Amongst so many challenges, the battle has waged on for over three long months. But the war…the war has only just begun.

Nominations Welcome

Nominations Welcome

We’ve conquered the distress of poor image organization, learned to speak in several new tongues, fulfilled our needs for platform organization, and constructed what may perhaps be the single most significant accomplishment of the entire year: Big Box Mode.

We’re looking forward to the Nobel Prize nominations.

The list of changes for this release is so full of significance that even the stars have felt their worth:

  • Big Box Mode home theater/game cabinet view
  • Platform management with metadata and images
  • Game video support
  • Automatic parsing of images, videos, music, and manuals from customizable folders
  • Default platform images thanks to bd000, scree, and the rest of the forums community
  • Simplified Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, and French translations thanks to cyanjiang, AFaustini, and Wattoo

We could not even begin to list all of the changes and improvements here, so be sure to study the app rigorously to ensure a proper understanding.

Click here to download LaunchBox 5.0, and never forget the struggles, the progress, the victories. But most importantly, prepare for the war that lies ahead.

XBMC (Kodi)See what we did there? XBMC will always be XBMC to us. Sure, they can be all cute and change the name to Kodi, but we’ll never stop referring to it as XBMC. Take that, brand management.

Regardless, we’re immensely excited about integrating Big Box with Ko…
er, XBMC. Thanks to Jeremy on the forums (aka @Syriacn), we now have a nice little plugin that makes it extremely easy. Check out the video below for the 5-minute process.

By popular demand, we’ve added a new option to purchase forever-updates licenses for LaunchBox Premium. Remember that LaunchBox Premium licenses never expire and will continue to work forever, but updates for them are no longer available after a year. The new forever-updates licenses will keep you on the cutting edge for years to come.

If you’ve already purchased a license, you now have the option to upgrade to a forever-updates license for $30. Otherwise, you can always renew for another year of updates for $10.

Brand new LaunchBox Premium forever-updates licenses are $50. Standard LaunchBox Premium licenses are still available for $20, so no changes have been made or are planned for the previous pricing model. Also remember that if you got in early, you’re already the proud owner of a forever-updates license.

Here’s a quick overview of the available pricing scenarios:

  • New LaunchBox Premium License (with 1 year of updates) – $20
  • Renew LaunchBox Premium License for another year – $10
  • New LaunchBox Premium Forever-Updates License – $50
  • Upgrade LaunchBox Premium License to a Forever-Updates License – $30

As always, thank you very much for the support! It is your support that ensures that LaunchBox will continue to be improved for years to come. We’re just getting started. :)
